IASSW is dedicated to improving the quality of life and education for children by enhancing the professional development of school social workers. The purpose of the IASSW board is to support school social workers throughout the state of Illinois, communicate with members regarding changes in the professional field and provide resources and training that is necessary to effectively perform the duties of a school social worker. 

Organization Goals

  • To enhance the educational and psychosocial development of all school age children
  • To promote best professional practice among school social workers
  • To enhance more effective communication among school social workers, members of related disciplines, and the community
  • To be involved in social action designated to improve educational and psycho-social conditions for children and families.

What makes a good Illinois Association of School Social Workers Board member? Candidates for board members should meet several of these qualifications.

  • Graduate of an approved College of Social Work 
  • Proactive advocate of children and the professional field of School Social Work
  • Has/Currently is a School Social Worker in the State of Illinois
  • Currently resides or is employed in the State of Illinois
  • Has supported or willing to support the Dee-Yeck Foundation
  • Has attended at least one Illinois Association of School Social Workers Conference in the last 3 years

Board members of Illinois Association of School Social Workers lead the efforts to foster beneficial connections among School Social Workers.  Our continued success depends on the personal commitment and active involvement of a select group of individuals, who embrace the privilege to serve and the responsibility to lead. Board members agree to uphold the board’s mission and meet the responsibilities and expectations detailed below. These include, but are not limited to:

Personal Involvement

  • Board Meeting Attendance
    - September, November, February, May and July (Board Retreat)
    - Provide reports to the board regarding region or committee (if committee chair)
  • Conference  
    - Attend state conference
    - Volunteer at state conference
  • Encourage and invite other School Social Workers to become active in the organization
  • Advocate - be well informed to convey the role of a school social worker to colleagues and stakeholders.

 

Leadership Development

  • Board Recruitment - identify strong candidates for the board who will represent the profession effectively. 
  • Strategic Planning - participate in setting annual board/committee goals and objectives at the annual retreat and throughout the year.
  • Advise – provide input to general members regarding issues that arise

 

Financial Support

  • Donation of an item for the annual auction which provides funding for the Dee-Yeck Foundation or PAC
  • Maintain membership status (dues are current) to Illinois Association of School Social Workers

The process to become a board member is as follows:

  1. Show intent to contribute to the board/committee
  2. Must meet the qualifications and willingness to meet expectations
  3. Submit an application with a statement of purpose to the current board president.  
  4. The candidate will be contacted to discuss the decision and next steps.
