Adopted by the IASSW Board of Directors on January 21, 1989. IASSW endorses the position that prevention programming is a necessary activity in the schools. Prevention encompasses a wide range of services which enable students to maximize their educational experiences. The school social worker has the professional expertise to develop and implement prevention programs. Current trends in Illinois emphasize prevention services. Prevention education, early identification and early intervention promote positive growth and development of students. Prevention programs have proven to be effective from both humanistic and financial perspectives. School social workers understand laws, regulations and community resources which relate to prevention programming. They understand interpersonal dynamics, environmental factors and systemic influences which impact on student achievement. Graduate social work education provides an integrated knowledge base relevant to the needs of students, families, schools and communities. The holistic approach of social workers provides the most effective means to design and implement appropriate prevention programs to meet diverse local needs. The Illinois Association of School Social Workers advocates prevention activities in the schools. Therefore, school social workers should play an active role in working with other school personnel to establish these prevention activities. | |||||||||||||||||||
